Why We Postponed Post UTME – Uniport
The University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) has stated its reason for postponing the Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) screening exercise earlier slated for the 4th of August, 2010.
The Postponement, according to Mr. Williams Wodi, the Deputy registrar, Information of the University, was as a result of incomplete print out of names of candidates made available to the school by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
We postponed it because the 1st and 2nd choice candidates matter a lot, but the print out we have is for 1st choice candidates, while our 2nd choice candidates are still in JAMB data base, and are yet to be up loaded to our system.
Wodi explained that the school authority is in contact with JAMB and will duely inform candidates with necessary information.
“We are in contact with JAMB to get these print out. The problems are logistic problems with JAMB in their office, and we hope they will sort it out.”
“When this is done, a date will be scheduled for the exercise.”
He explained further that the set back is part of the result of the National Assembly’s inability to come to a consensus over universities certifying prospective students before admitting them.
JAMB, he said is consequently unhappy that universities are allowed to conduct their own screening exercise after the UTME.
“We want the 1st and 2nd choices list to be unified so that every one can be given equal sign to write the test simultaneously.”
“We know that JAMB is under pressure”. We are under pressure too but ours is to ensure that in this 24th century knowledge – driven society, the university will look for candidates who are academic materials”, Wodi concluded.
