Institute, Total Google Partner On Teachers Project
The Massachussetts Institute of Technology International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) in collaboration with its corporate partners, Total and Google has announced a new “Empowering the Teachers” project.
The project is geared towards enabling outstanding young Nigerian faculties in Science and Engineering to collaborate with the faculty at Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in developing new curriculum and teaching methods.
In its first year, the programme will select up to ten outstanding young faculties from electrical engineering, computer science and computer engineering in Nigerian universities to spend a spring semester at MIT, from February to May, 2011.
They will observe instruction in their fields and work as a group to prepare innovative curricular and approaches to teaching that can be introduced into their home universities on their return.
According to a release made available to The Tide, during their stay, representatives of the Faculties will participate regularly in at least two MIT subjects, including recitations and tutorials, that correspond to courses the faculty members teach at their home universities.
They would attend weekly Africa Fellows Seminar meetings on curriculum development meet with professors and teaching assistants.
Beyond the fellowship semester, “Empowering the Teachers” will support online communications, periodic re-unions and meetings in Nigeria in order to build, over time, a community of faculties devoted to excellence and innovation in Science and engineering education.
Director of the programme, professor Akintunde Ibitayo Akinwande, a professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of MIT, along with other faculties at MIT are billed to wellcome Nigerian colleagues in their classroom.
According to the release, only Ph.D holders, corresponding to Electrical Engineering and computer Science are eligible to apply.
However, the programme plans to extend to mechanical Engineering, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Geology, Geophysics, Ocean Engineering and Materials Science.
The programme covers the travel, living, and instructional materials expenses of participants, while the home universities of successful applicants will be required to commit to provide paid leaves of absence during the period of the MIT programme.

Education Commissioner Seeks media collaboration in Rivers
The River State Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor has called on media practitioners in Rivers State to deploy their various communication platforms toward promoting government programmes and policies aimed at achieving sustainable development in the education sector.
