SFN Awaits Sponsorship For 2010 Activities
The Scrabble Federation of Nigeria (SFN) says it is waiting for corporate organisations to sponsor its activities for this year.
The federation has carried out only two of the eight events in its 2010 calendar.
It had conducted the National Tournament Directors and Adjudicators workshop in Abuja and a national tournament in Adamawa earlier in the year.
Other events on the SFN calendar are the National Universities Championship, Qualifying Tournament for African Championship and camping for African Championship all of which will hold in Lagos.
The rest are 4th Governor Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics in Uyo in September, African Championship in Ghana in October and National Championship in December in Abuja.
NSF secretary James Eakyns told newsmen that they had sent proposals to some companies and were hopeful they would yield results.
“The federation is following up these proposals and we hope that they would find favour before the organisations, some of which have begun to look into them.
“Organisations like Cadbury, Nigeria Bottling Company, NNPC and Evans Medical are now looking into the proposals,’’ Eakyns said.
He said that the proposal would be discussed and ratified at the Annual General Meetings of the companies soon.
Eakyns, however, said that some scrabble enthusiasts would bankroll some of the national tournaments to keep the players in competition form.
The secretary said that the 4th Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics would be used to select players for the Africa Scrabble Championship in Ghana.
The continental championship holds in Accra from October 20 to October 24.
