Channels Journalist Killed In Cross River
Mr Jerry Usanga, a camera man of Channels Television Calabar, attached to Government House Press Corps was killed on Tuesday following a misunder-standing at a club.
A source told newsmen that Usanga was out at a bar with some friends at the Federal Housing Estate around 8 p.m. when an argument ensued between him and some people. The source said that in spite of settling the problem, one of the people hit the deceased on the head, on his way home.
The deceased’s wife, Mrs. Rose Usanga, told our source that she had spoken with him at about 3 p.m. on the fateful day. ”I called him later about five times and no one picked. After a while somebody called back with his phone. It was a strange voice. I thought it was one of his colleagues. “Later a strange voice called and said he was a taxi man. I said the phone was my husband’s own and then the person told me to come and carry my husband’s body.” The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), of the Federal Housing Police Division, Mr Abdulkarim Dauda, confirmed the incident and said investigation had begun.
Dauda added that a suspect was already in police custody. Reacting to the incident, Mr Omini Oden, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Cross River Chapter, condemned the act. He expressed the hope that the police would get to the root of the matter by prosecuting the perpetrators.
