Sylva Wants Constitutional Roles For Monarchs
Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa has called for constitutional roles for traditional rulers.
He made the call while receiving members of the South-South Forum in Yenagoa.
Sylva explained that giving constitutional roles to the traditional institution would enhance good governance.
Sylva, who observed that the South-South Forum should have been formed long ago, granted its request for the provision of a secretariat in Yenagoa.
The Protem Chairman of the forum, Amayanabo of Nembe, King Edmund Daukoru, had earlier said the forum was formed based on the fact that most geographical zones in the country had traditional rulers’ fora.
He said the forum came up with some resolutions at a workshop held in Port Harcourt in October 2009, which would be presented to the National Assembly, particularly the constitution drafting committee.
Daukoru said some of the seven-point resolutions had to do with the advocacy for the recognition of their roles in the constitution and judicial system, as adjudicators at local levels.
He said some of the major challenges facing the forum were the absence of specific roles for the traditional institution and the problem of funding.
