Leave Companies Alone, Amaechi Tells Youths
Rivers State Government has warned youths against the harassment of companies operating in the state.
Gov. Chibuike Amaechi gave the warning while addressing protesting Rebisi youths, last Saturday, at Government House, Port Harcourt.
He said government had outlawed the acts whereby youths and community leaders harassed companies unnecessarily.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Magnus Abe, the governor warned that youths should desist from approaching companies for favours.
He explained that the Bill prohibiting such harassment by communities and youth organisations would soon be forwarded to the state House of Assembly.
“And as you must all know, this law, when passed, provides for three years imprisonment without an option of fine for anyone convicted.
“You can no longer go to companies to squeeze them, we will not allow it and we will fight it to the end,” he said.
Amaechi said any community or group that had any grievance against any company should channel such matters to the relevant ministries for prompt attention.
He noted that time had come for youths in the state to do things sensibly, saying that what the youth groups could do at the moment was to organise themselves positively.
Amaechi maintained that companies operating in the state must be allowed to work without any hindrance, to enable them expand their business and employ more Rivers people.
Earlier, the Secretary of Rebisi Youth Progressive Alliance, Mr Edward Odum, said Weatherford Nigeria Limited, a company operating in the state, terminated the employment of 18 indigenes of the community and replaced them with non-indigenes.
He said the company rebuffed efforts to hold dialogue with the youths and appealed to the government to investigate the circumstances surrounding the matter.
