Rotary Donates N6.8m Artificial Limb Factory To LASG
The Rotary International District 9110 has donated an artificial limb factory built at a cost of N6.8 million to the Lagos State Government.
Commissioning the factory recently, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said the limb factory would be of immense benefit to patients with limb deformity.
According to him, the factory would be able to produce artificial limbs of various sizes and would put to an end the importation of artificial limbs from overseas to meet the needs of people with broken limbs.
In his words, “If other countries of the world can manufacture artificial limbs, why not Nigeria, Lagos State over the year had established programmes which require the services of the factory”.
Idris said a four-man committee has been raised to manage the artificial limb factory at the Mushin General Hospital, Lagos to make it more efficient.
The commissioner also appealed to the committee to come up with modalities on how to sustain the factory adding that a senior orthopaedic technologist, Max Acamun, from Uganda has already trained three staff from the Mushin General Hospital on how to manufacture artificial limbs locally.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Chairman, Project Committee of the Rotary International District 9110, Mr. Deinde Shoga, said the project was conceived in 2003, adding that, the factory gulped $45,000 (N6.8million)
The President, Rotary District 9110, Engr. Tayo Alabi, stressed that the project had come to stay and promised the continued support of his organisation on training and retraining of health officials on limbs manufacturing.
