Industrial Accident: Former Noble Staff Demands N500m, Petitions RSHA
A former staff of Noble Drilling Company of Nigeria, Mr. Kingsley Anuri has petitioned the Rivers State House of Assembly on his alleged ordeal in the hands of the management of the oil firm.
In his petition captioned, “My case of abandonment by Noble Drilling Company of Nigeria,” and addressed to the Chairman, Public Complaints and Petitions Committee of the House, Mr. Anuri alleged that the company abandoned him with permanent deformity, which he incurred while in active service with the company.
He stated that he was employed by the company in 2000 as a rosterbout under the supervision of an expatriate staff.
On April 7, 2001, while working at Egulagha 8th Clusterwell in Bayelsa State, he said, his supervisor, who also doubled as a crane operator, directed him to push up a crane line to enable work resume, stressing that in the process, his right hand glove got entangled in the crane shaft.
“As my hand was trapped, the crane lifted me up, and I shouted until the operator manipulated the crane before I was dropped down,” the petition stated.
“Because of the accident, an emergency chopper was called, and I was flown to Chevron Field Clinic, where I was given intensive medical care. The next morning, I was flown by Aero Contractors back to Nigerian Air Force Base, Port Harcourt, and was admitted at Rivers Clinic,” he stated.
He said he spent four months in the clinic during which his right hand was operated upon, adding that today, he suffers permanent deformity in his right hand.
According to him, on the fifth month, while he was still going for treatment and negotiating with his employer on how to change his duty schedules as obtained in the company’s operational policy, his name was placed under redundancy.
All efforts to get the management through the workers’ union to address his case, according to him, was fruitless as the management paid deaf ears to his plight.
His attempts to get employed in other establishments have continued to fail as a result of the permanent deformity which makes him unfit.
Mr. Anuri, an indigene of Emohua Local Government Area in Rivers State said, he has five children, most of who are in secondary school, and appealed to the committee to prevail on his former employer to be fair to him by showing expected commitment as a responsible corporate citizen.
He is also demanding, amongst other things, N500million as compensation for the deformity, and apology for the psychological trauma he has passed through since the period of abandonment.
He also wants the company to reinstate his appointment and to change his duty schedules to such functions he can perform with his deformed state.

Senate Seeks Mandate To Track, Trace, Recover Stolen Crude Oil Proceeds
Nwoko who is also the Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, said that forensic reviews show over S22b, S81b and S200b remained unaccounted for across different audit periods.
“I remain committed, alongside my colleagues, to ensuring accountability, recovery, and reform within the oil and gas sector.
Nwoko stated that the Committee had earlier presented its interim report before the senate saying “Our investigation has so far uncovered massive revenue losses amounting to over $300 billion in unaccounted crude oil proceeds over the years.
“This represents one of the most troubling cases of economic sabotage our nation has ever faced.
“We have made far-reaching recommendations to end this long-standing menace.
“There is need for strict enforcement of international crude oil measurement standards at all production and export points.
He urged the federal government to mandate the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to deploy modern, tamper-proof measuring technology or return this function to the Department of Weights and Measures under the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment.
The senator called for the deployment of advanced surveillance systems, including drones, to assist security agencies in combating oil theft.
He also called for the creation of a Special Court for Crude Oil Theft to ensure swift prosecution of offenders and their collaborators, saying it would also go a long way in tackling the challenge.
“We must also ensure the full implementation of the Host Communities Development Trust Fund under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to empower local communities and reduce sabotage.
“Ceding abandoned oil wells to the NUPRC for allocation to modular refineries to support local production and job creation is also very vital in fighting the menace of oil theft and sabotage,” Nwoko further said.
