Minister Urges Partnership With Media On Violence Against Women
Media practitioners in the state have been told to partner with the Ministry of Women Affairs in the Campaign for the elimination of violence against women.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Manuela George lzunwa made the call during a Media advocacy breakfast meeting organized by the Ministry as part of activities for the 16 day advocacy/activism campaign with the theme “Commit, Act, Demand: We Can End Violence Against Women”.
Mrs. lzunwa described the press as the mouthpiece of the people stressing that time has come when the media should take up its role of educating and informing the people with positive messages to achieve the desired change.
The Commissioner who described women as weaker vessels said, they should not be dehumanised pointing out that, it is unacceptable for women to be treated violently.
According to her, the Ministry has declared zero tolerance to violence against women, as violence is not a means of conflict resolution charging such victims to speak out.
She also advised that it is vital that we work to address the issue of violence in the society, so that ultimately every woman will be protected, emphasising that the aim of the meeting is to publicly declare government’s support for the campaign.
Speaking during the advocacy breakfast meeting, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Pat Ogbonnaya acknowledged the support of the media and called on them not to relent in their service to humanity.
In her contributions, the General Manager, Radio Rivers, Ms Medline Tador, said she was delighted to be a part of the campaign as over fifty percent of women are affected in different ways, pointing out that the Ministry is saddled with great responsibilities and parents owe it to their children to make sure that they are brought up in a violence free environment and pledged their unflinching support and willingness to do all they can in the campaign for the elimination of violence against women.
In attendance were the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN, Ministry of Information (MOI) and the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
