Okocha Hails FG’s Amnesty To Militants … As NOA Plans Sensitisation Campaign
Former President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, O.C. J. Okocha has hailed the Federal Government’s amnesty offer to Niger Delta Militants.
Okocha made his position known in a telephone chat with The Tide at the weekend.
According to him, the terms are acceptable and should be embraced by all militant groups in the region as a step towards achieving lasting peace.
He also enjoined all persons within the region to embrace peace as well, saying that the long sought development of the Niger Delta would never be achieved in an atmosphere of acrimony.
His words: “We are obliged to give the federal government the benefit of doubt, and hope that this time around, the Federal Government will be sincere and exhibit the necessary political will to do all that is right, fair and just.”
Meanwhile, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Rivers State, has hinted of plans to carry out massive campaign to educate the citizenry on the amnesty and why the society should receive the militants into its midst.
State Director of NOA, Chief Andy Nweye, who gave the hint to The Tide on Monday, in Port Harcourt, said immediately the agency concludes studying the details of the amnesty, intense public education would be carried out to ensure that the citizenry fully understand the government’s gesture.
According to him, “If the Federal Government can forgive their own brothers, I think we should also agree to forgive them as our own brothers.”
The campaign, he explained would be central on the need to rehabilitate and incorporate the militants into the society as normal persons.
He expressed fear that there might be public apathy and resentment towards repentant militants by the citizenry but said re-orientation and public empathy are crucial for them to be re-integrated into the society.
