Oliseh’s Resignation, Long Overdue- Chairman
Chairman of Ondo State
Football Agency (ODSFA), John Mafo, in Akure said the resignation of Sunday Oliseh as Super Eagles Coach was long overdue.
“It is a welcome development and I believe it is a right step in the right direction. Oliseh has done his best for this country as a player and also as a coach.
“But it is long overdue, and we can now only wish him the best in his future endeavours,” he said.
Mafo however pointed out that there was always a huge difference between being a successful player and being a successful coach.
While disagreeing with Ahmed Musa’s choice as Super Eagles captain, he said the decision was not popular among football followers in the country, especially among the senior players.
“With every sense of humility and respect, Musa should not have been made the captain of the team, especially when we still have some senior players in the team.
“Musa is a good player no doubt, but Ì am not sure he was the right choice to captain the Eagles,” he said.
Mafo, however advised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to go for the best coach for the Super Eagles, irrespective of the colour of his skin.
He said such a coach was the only one capable of bringing back the golden era of Nigerian football.
“The NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, has said the federation’s current executive committee would not employ a Nigerian to be the coach of the Eagles again. “This is a policy statement. I believe the NFF owes it a duty to get the best coach for Nigeria.
“We have seen foreign coaches who succeeded with the Eagles in the past. The likes of Bonfere Jo, Clemens Westerhof and Otto Gloria all did well as foreign coaches.
“However, Stephen Keshi, Amodu Shuaibu and Adegboye Onigbinde also brought glory to Nigeria as indigenous coaches,” he said.
