Local Firms Record Breakthrough In Maritime Transportation
An indigenous firm, Almarine Nigeria Ltd, has announced a breakthrough in marine transportation with the construction of two modern boats – A42 Water Bus (Almarine) and A40 Mass Transit Almarine boats.
Dr Chinedu Jideofo-Ogbuagu, the President of the Maritime Professional Association (MPA), who announced the feat in Port Harcourt on Friday, said the two boats were undergoing voyage tests and would soon be presented to the public.
He said A42 with overall length of 42 feet, moulded depth of 10ft, draft 0.36 metre, and minimum capacity of 20 knots, could carry 40 passengers with a three-man crew.
Jideofo-Ogbuagu also said that the boat had a capacity of 1000 liters fuel and storage capacity of 1500 kilogrammes.
On the A40 boat, the MPA president said it had overall length of 40 feet, moulded breadth of 10.2 feet, moulded depth of 6.6 feet, draft 360 millimeter, minimum speed of 20 knot at full load with 58 passengers and a three-man crew.
He said the boat would be of immense value to marine transportation in Nigerian coastal waters, especially in the Niger Delta, noting that “A40 has storage capacity of 3000kg and 600 liters of fuel capacity.”
Jideofo-Ogbuagu stressed the need for the government, oil companies and other maritime-based companies to patronise local boat builders.
He said patronage to boat builders would have numerous effects as it would enable Nigerians to reap the gains of Cabotage and the Local Content Acts.
“It amounts to economic sabotage for anyone to import boats that Nigerian boat builders like Almarine can build and are already building.
“We note that imported boats are often 10 times more expensive and less suitable than similar boats built in Nigeria.
“Unpatriotic boat importation does not make any economic or operational sense. So the government should sanction those involved in the act,” Jideofo-Ogbuagu implored.
The MPA chief called on the federal government to investigate the fund being collected by NIMASA as Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund and Ship Building and Ship Acquisition Fund.
He alleged that local boat builders were not enjoying any relief evisage in the fund, pointing out that if the government should address the problem, “Nigeria might be ranked among the world best maritime developed nations.”
