That World Mothers’ Report
The fourth and fifth
millennium goals of the United Nations target the reduction by 2/3 of child mortality and improvement of maternal health in a set time limit of 25 years. 24 years down the line, an international organization in charge of gauging the welfare of mothers and children has ranked Nigeria as the 171st among 178 countries under its gauge.
At first, I thought it was a mistake. My country actually came tops from the rear? No! not after the efforts by the federal government, in partnership with the state governments to curb the menace of maternal and infant mortality by improving maternal and child’s health, or were the strategies not valid enough to proffer solutions to a problem they were employed to solve?
The 15th annual state of the world’s mothers report has ranked Nigeria 171st amongst 178 nations thereby branding Nigeria one of the worst countries for mothers and children to live in.
According to the report, with a population of 177, 155, 754 Nigeria has a death rate of 74 per 1,000. Its maternal death risk, according to the mothers’ index ranking, is 1 in 29 while saying only 61% of the populace have access to clean water.
My worry is the position Nigeria appeared in, However, my consolation lies in the fact that the ranking was probably done without any sinister suggestion and that in a way tells the country the health status of its citizenry in spite of what is considered a worthy effort at bringing health care delivery to the doorstep of the common man.
Save the children’s mothers’ index gauges the welfare of mothers and children in 178 countries of the world both the developed and the developing countries. Its presence has been registered in Nigeria since 2001. From improving health system in Northern Nigeria, to the delivering of maternal, newborn and child health services, including the revival of routine immunization, the body is known for helping 4,320 children through support for protection and peace committee as well as getting 12,400 children back to school providing them with clean water.
The 2014 ranking of Nigeria as 171st by the save children mothers’ index to me is to say the least, a declaration of state of emergency for the health of mothers and children in the country hence the need to fast track efforts at reassessing our strategies to avoid an eventual crashing of the system.
Surprisingly, Nigerians’ imagination was caught by Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), an 8-point international goals from the very day they were agreed by a record of 189 countries and 23 international organizations at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in September 2000. Nigeria was an enthusiastic signatory to the MDGs and has claimed to pursue them vigorously although with varying degrees of success.
Six of the eight goals have provisions for the children because they are the most vulnerable when essentials like food, water and health are scarce. They are always the first victims a project of 25 years set time limit, 24 years down the line, the score card is indicating red what hope for the masses?
Or was the barometer faulty? What is Nigeria’s assessment of its performance all these years?
Of course the issue of funding cannot even be suggested as a factor for the country’s inability to attract a pass mark in the assessment exercise. This is because to accelerate progress in this regard, the G8 finance ministers agreed in June 2005 to provide enough funds to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the African Development Bank (ADB) to cancel $40 to $55 billion in debt owed by members of the heavily indebted poor countries to allow them redirect resources to programs aimed at improving health and education and for alleviating poverty.
As at last year, 2013, progress towards the goals was uneven. Some countries actually achieved remarkable goals while others were not on track to realize any.
However new commitment targeted women’s and children’s health in the world wide battle against poverty, hunger and disease. Other strategies include, building effective partnership in order to make best use of scarce resources and minimize duplication in efforts to improve maternal and newborn health. Advocating for investment in maternal and newborn health by highlighting the socio-economic benefits and by emphasizing maternal mortality as human right and equity issue, as well as coordinating research with wide scale application.
It will be recalled that earlier assessment had reported slow success in the realization of maternal health which poses greater challenge to women’s existence. However, maternal mortality is said to have reduced from what it was though insignificantly. The success rate of reproductive health through the use of contraceptive is as good as no success record at all which researchers suspect could be likely linked to poor medical facilities and half-baked medical personnel.
Meanwhile low-cost intervention measure has also been spotted as being able to reduce newborn death by up to 70% which include involvement of members of local communities who convey basic medical knowledge in order to improve current child birth practices while respecting cultural and religious beliefs.
The United Nations “Millennium goal five deals with the improvement in maternal health. Its target is to reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio and to achieve, by 2015, universal access to reproductive health. This became imperative when it was obvious that many of the maternal deaths were due to no access to skilled routine and emergency care and failure to use effective method of contraception.
It was considered that satisfying the unmet need for family planning alone could cut the number of maternal deaths by almost a third.
For the Global Strategy for women’s and children’s health, saving the lives of women who are at risk of dying of complications during pregnancy and childbirth including unsafe abortion between 2011 and 2015 is achievable.
Perhaps a re-evaluation of our strategy towards the actualisation of the millenium goals 4 and 5 could reposition Nigeria in the eyes of the world.

The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, recently urged youths in the Rivers State to take advantage of the vast opportunities available to become employers of labour and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the State. Governor Fubara noted that global trends increasingly favour entrepreneurship and innovation, and said that youths in Rivers State must not be left behind in harnessing these opportunities. The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Benibo Anabraba, made this known while declaring open the 2026 Job Fair organised by the Rivers State Government in partnership with the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) in Port Harcourt. The Governor acknowledged the responsibility of government to create jobs for its teeming youth population but noted that it is unrealistic to absorb all job seekers into the civil service.
“As a government, we recognise our duty to provide employment opportunities for our teeming youths. However, we also understand that not all youths can be accommodated within the civil service. This underscores the need to encourage entrepreneurship across diverse sectors and to partner with other stakeholders, including the youths themselves, so they can transition from being job seekers to employers of labour,” he said. It is necessary to State that Governor Fubara has not only stated the obvious but was committed to drive youth entrepreneurship towards their self-reliance and the economic development of the State It is not news that developed economies of the world are skilled driven economies. The private sector also remains the highest employer of labour in private sector driven or capitalist economy though it is also the responsibility of government to create job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth population in Nigeria which has the highest youth unemployed population in the subSahara Africa.
The lack of job opportunities, caused partly by the Federal Government’s apathy to job creation, the lack of adequate supervision of job opportunities economic programmes, lack of employable skills by many youths in the country have conspired to heighten the attendant challenges of unemployment. The challenges which include, “Japa” syndrome (travelling abroad for greener pastures), that characterises the labour market and poses threat to the nation’s critical sector, especially the health and medical sector; astronomical increase in the crime rate and a loss of interest in education. While job seeking youths should continuously acquire skills and explore opportunities within their immediate environment as well as in the global space through the use of digital platforms, government, corporate/ multinational organizations or the organised private sector should generate skills and provide the enabling environment for skills acquisition, through adequate funding and resettlement packages that will provide sustainable economic life for beneficiaries.
While commending the Rivers State Government led by the People First Governor, Sir Siminilayi Fubara for initiating “various training and capacity-building programmes in areas such as ICT and artificial intelligence, oil and gas, maritime, and the blue economy, among others”, it is note-worthy that the labour market is dynamic and shaped by industry-specific demands, technological advancements, management practices and other emerging factors. So another sector the Federal, State and Local Governments should encourage youths to explore and harness the abounding potentials, in my considered view, is Agriculture. Agriculture remains a veritable solution to hunger, inflation, and food Insecurity that ravages the country. No doubt, the Nigeria’s arable landmass is grossly under-utilised and under-exploited.
In recent times, Nigerians have voiced their concerns about the persistent challenges of hunger, inflation, and the general increase in prices of goods and commodities. These issues not only affect the livelihoods of individuals and families but also pose significant threats to food security and economic stability in the country. The United Nations estimated that more than 25 million people in Nigeria could face food insecurity this year—a 47% increase from the 17 million people already at risk of going hungry, mainly due to ongoing insecurity, protracted conflicts, and rising food prices. An estimated two million children under five are likely to be pushed into acute malnutrition. (Reliefweb ,2023). In response, Nigeria declared a state of emergency on food insecurity, recognizing the urgent need to tackle food shortages, stabilize rising prices, and protect farmers facing violence from armed groups. However, without addressing the insecurity challenges, farmers will continue to struggle to feed their families and boost food production.
In addition, parts of northwest and northeast Nigeria have experienced changes in rainfall patterns making less water available for crop production. These climate change events have resulted in droughts and land degradations; presenting challenges for local communities and leading to significant impact on food security. In light of these daunting challenges, it is imperative to address the intricate interplay between insecurity and agricultural productivity. Nigeria can work toward ensuring food security, reducing poverty, and fostering sustainable economic growth in its vital agricultural sector. In this article, I suggest solutions that could enhance agricultural production and ensure that every state scales its agricultural production to a level where it can cater to 60% of the population.
This is feasible and achievable if government at all levels are intentional driving the development of the agricultural sector which was the major economic mainstay of the Country before the crude oil was struck in commercial quantity and consequently became the nation’s monolithic revenue source. Government should revive the moribund Graduate Farmers Scheme and the Rivers State School-to-Land agricultural programmes to operate concurrently with other skills acquisition and development programmes. There should be a consideration for investment in mechanized farming and arable land allocation. State and local governments should play a pivotal role in promoting mechanized farming and providing arable land for farming in communities. Additionally, allocating arable land enables small holder farmers to expand their operations and contribute to food security at the grassroots level.
Nigeria can unlock the potential of its agricultural sector to address the pressing needs of its population and achieve sustainable development. Policymakers and stakeholders must heed Akande’s recommendations and take decisive action to ensure a food-secure future for all Nigerians.
