A total of 110 awaiting trial inmates at the Port Harcourt Maximum Prison in Rivers State have regained their freedom.
The 110 lucky inmates were freed by the state Chief Judge, Justice Adanma I. Iyaye-Lamankara, as part of the activities marking the state’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The state chief judge conducted the special goal delivery exercise which commenced last Tuesday, and ended yesterday, as part of efforts to decongest the prisons during the one month festive period in the state as well as give the lucky inmates the opportunity to be part of the Golden Jubilee celebration.
The breakdown of the released inmates show that 85 were released from Port Harcourt prisons, while 25 were released from the Ahoada Prison.
The breakdown further shows that out of the number, one inmate was a Cameroonian national, and a 19-year old female, while the remaining were male inmates.
The inmates, who received the state Chief Judge’s Golden Jubilee pardon were those who have been granted bail from 2012 – 2016 and could not perfect the bail conditions and those with critical health challenges.
Also considered were those who had served their jail terms but are still in awaiting trial, as well as those with minor offences who had stayed longer in the custody.

She warned that they will not be given such opportunity again should they decide to come back to the prison again.
“You can go to your villages and start to farm so as to help yourselves, do not be idle, and help the society”, she stated.
The state chief judge urged the prison officials to ensure that the inmates were taken to court as at when due in other to enable them speed up their trials.
She thanked the prison officials for their cooperation, even as she promised that the exercise will be a continuous one.
