AEPB Demolishes Nyanya Scrap Market For Motor Park
The Abuja Environmental
Protection Board (AEPB), has demolished Nyanya scrap market and sets it aside for motor park.
The Director-General of AEPB, Mr Shehu Lawan, disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja, recently.
He said that the move was part of efforts to maintain a clean and hygienic environment around the FCT.
He also said that it would reduce traffic jam and prevent nuisance and miscreants from hanging around the environment.
Lawan said that the scrap market, which was popularly known as “pan taker” was originally made for motor park.
He said that the exercise would enable those using the area to have confidence to move freely, especially along the Nyanya axis, without fear of insurgency.
“We are doing this exercise because of several reports of insecurity in and around the area.
“We have a large number of scavengers, these people could be use for evil act and they are armed with sharp objects and dangerous weapons.
“The insurgents could also take an advantage to besiege this area to plan their evil acts and plant explosives in the area.
“We discovered that there are so many nuisance and illegal businesses going on along the Nyanya axis.
“Illegal parking, abandoned vehicles and other unnecessary things are really going on around the area, so we decided to clear the entire nuisance to allow for free flow of traffic.
“Any area that is marked for motor parks and open space or shops, but are illegally occupied will be cleared.
“We have permanently ban scavengers and touts from operating around the area, they are all aware, so, it is not a new development, ’’he said.
Lawan said that the exercise would be extended to Kubwa, Dei Dei and Lugbe areas of the FCT.
He said that all the pedestrian bridges where hawkers are doing their activities would also be visited by the board.
The director-general said that the board met with the leaders of the Nyanya Scrap Market Association before embarking on the demolition.
He said that they held a meeting with the “pan taker” on July 27, informing them of the decision of the board.
Lawan said that the board also instructed them to move to Bwari and Ajata areas, where they made a provision for them to be operating.
He said that AEPB had enjoyed maximum support of some security agencies.
The Chairman of the association, Mr Abdulsallam Shehu, who spoke on behalf of the association, said that AEPB actually informed them of the development.
He, however, said that the notice was short and appealed to the board to give them more time to put some of their items in order.
“The work we are doing is where we feed our entire family, they should therefore please give us more time to arrange ourselves before relocating to the new site,’’ he said.
