A’Ibom Partners Senior Citizens Centre
The Akwa Ibom State Government has expressed its commitment to partner with the National Senior Citizens Centre in order to take care of her elderly people across the State.
The State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, made this known during the elderly abuse awareness and elder justice advocacy workshop and the unveiling of Economic Empowerment of Senior-Lead Cooperative Societies in Uyo, the state capital.
Represented by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Hon. Emem Ibanga, the Governor noted that the government makes deliberate efforts to take care of her citizens, especially for them to witness and experience the dividends of democracy irrespective of their tribe without.
The Governor commended the National Senior Citizens centre for their tremendous work and having the passion to take care of the elderly, saying “we should always respect the elderly people. Understanding old age is a blessing from God, which in turn will also experience.
“Government will not fail to assist the elderly as it relates to their wellbeing”.
The Director General, National Senior Citizens Centre, Dr. Emem Omokaro, commended the government’s partnership with the centre, saying it is a welcome development that would enable them to achieve their goals.
According to her, “to be old is not a waste but a treasure for the nation, and to engage them in entrepreneurship traning is really good”.
The chairman of the occasion, Prof. Aniefiok Essien, commended the centre for having the passion to take care of the elderly, which, he noted, “is not an easy task, especially engaging them into entrepreneurship”.
He said technically the workshop has made the senior citizens to look like young ones because of the level of education it exposed them to.
