Respect Constituted Authorities
Respect for constituted authorities, including the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, is a command and an audacious declaration from God.
In his letter to the church at Rome (and by extension to everyone who believes the Bible is the word of God and fundamentally the rule and canon for day to day living) Paul instructs: Let every soul be subject unto the highest powers. (The highest political, leadership and administrative power in Rivers State resides in the Governor). For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained by God (even the power of the Governor). Whosoever, therefore resisteth the power, (the Governor) resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resisteth (the Governor) shall receive to themselves damnation—punishment and curse (Rom. 13: 1-2). Addition mine.
Peter in his first General Epistle (2: 17) also instructs, “Show Respect for all people (treat them honourably)…fear God and respect the King (the Governor).
Even in the Kingdom of Light (Heaven) and the Kingdom of Darkness there are hierarchies that are highly respected and regarded. Not even the fall of Lucifer gave Angel Michael the temerity to insult or make a disparaging statement against Lucifer. Jude the half-brother of Jesus recalling the encounter of Archangel Michael against former archangel Lucifer said, “Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, did not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. (Jude vs 9).
Therefore, it is sacrilegious, and an abomination to abuse a Governor- telling him foolish in public domains. Such unguarded utterance is unpardonable when it is committed by a leader who is supposed to show good morales, embody decorum in speech and decency of behaviour.
When people who society should look on to for credible and exemplary lifestyle are themselves the breakers, with impunity, of societal and moral values, then society is tottering on the brink of moral turpitude and collapse. Such leaders are distraction and have nothing good to offer to the younger generation. At best they could be described as men who are under the unpleasant influence of “kaikai” or drug . addiction borrowing the words of Archbishop Eyindah of the Anglican Communion.
Such leaders do not deserve a public office because public officers are by the demands of office, meant to provide direction, focus, regard for morality and decent living to the people they are leading. It is abuse of office and affront on the sensibility of the people when leaders do not have respect for the office of the Governor of a State or a King. Such dastardly acts happen when, according to Socrates (470-399 B.C), “criminals and evil doers” assume leadership roles and duties. And because “criminals and evil doers want power (are occupying leadership positions), there will be worst dictatorship than in the time of any monarchy or oligarchy”. We see a fulfilment of Socrates’ prediction.
In civilised climes, decency of behaviour is applied when correcting a leader who deviates from the constitutional or statutory obligation. Paul, in one of his pastoral epistles prescribed how leaders should be treated when he said: Rebuke not leaders, do not disdain them (1 Timothy 5: 1). But pray for them so they can offer good leadership that will produce peace, and development.
“I exhort therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercession and giving of thanks be made for all men. For kings and for all that are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and honesty (1 Timothy 2: 1-2).
It is pertinent to state that there cannot be two Governors in a State at the same time. Neither is a defacto Governorship role fashionable anywhere in the world. Those given leadership position should be allowed to serve and be accountable to the people whom their resources are being held in trust.
I agree with Chief Nyesom Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State and presently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja that “the governors who want to continue as godfathers are the problem of Nigeria”. In an interview with Premium Times in September, 2018, Chief Wike was quoted as saying: I will not put a successor in office. Mention who has survived it-,that you put your life at stake and bring up somebody to become the governor, and therefore, you will be in charge and he will protect you. It is not correct. As a student of history I know it does not work that way. I will do what I have to do to serve my people and I will retire when my time has come to an end…That is the problem we are having, people want to continue as godfathers”.
God gives power to any person He wants ( Daniel 4: 25; 1 Samuel 2: 8). But he uses humans. That a person is used of God to lift up others, does not make the person so used, God. According to Wale Adenuga Production, “We are (only) pencil in the hand of the Creator”. People should rather thank God for using them to bless and raise up others. No person is self-made. A benefactor today must have been a beneficiary of some person’s benevolence. A person who raised someone must have been raised by another person. Life is symbiotic. We should not lose our sense of sound judgment and reasoning because of what someone has made us to be.
Sir Siminalayi Fubara is the governor of Rivers State, so has the infallible God ordained, we must accept it and accept him. The sooner we come to terms with this stark reality, the better for our health and our State because no person can fight God. Denying the reality of Fubara’s Governorship status is a delusion and smacks violation of God’s word and command. It is an affront on God.
The beauty of life is the function of the Law of Retributive Justice (Sowing and Reaping). If you show contempt, disregard and disrespect to the office of the Governor and the Governor, Fubara’s fate will bring you to a position where people will inevitably pay you back in your coin.
The Holy Bible is the word of God. It is “Living, Quick and Powerful”. You will reap what you sow, if not today, certainly tomorrow.
People should learn to be independent-minded and resist the temptation of mortgaging their conscience, compromising value system and integrity because of pecuniary gains because when wealth is lost, nothing is lost, when position is lost, nothing is lost, but when integrity is lost all is lost.

Empowering Youth Through Agriculture
Quote:”While job seeking youths should continuously acquire skills and explore opportunities within their immediate environment as well as in the global space through the use of digital platforms, government, corporate/ multinational organizations or the organised private sector should generate skills and provide the enabling environment for skills acquisition, through adequate funding and resettlement packages that will provide sustainable economic life for beneficiaries”.
The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, recently urged youths in the Rivers State to take advantage of the vast opportunities available to become employers of labour and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the State. Governor Fubara noted that global trends increasingly favour entrepreneurship and innovation, and said that youths in Rivers State must not be left behind in harnessing these opportunities. The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Benibo Anabraba, made this known while declaring open the 2026 Job Fair organised by the Rivers State Government in partnership with the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) in Port Harcourt. The Governor acknowledged the responsibility of government to create jobs for its teeming youth population but noted that it is unrealistic to absorb all job seekers into the civil service.
“As a government, we recognise our duty to provide employment opportunities for our teeming youths. However, we also understand that not all youths can be accommodated within the civil service. This underscores the need to encourage entrepreneurship across diverse sectors and to partner with other stakeholders, including the youths themselves, so they can transition from being job seekers to employers of labour,” he said. It is necessary to State that Governor Fubara has not only stated the obvious but was committed to drive youth entrepreneurship towards their self-reliance and the economic development of the State It is not news that developed economies of the world are skilled driven economies. The private sector also remains the highest employer of labour in private sector driven or capitalist economy though it is also the responsibility of government to create job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth population in Nigeria which has the highest youth unemployed population in the subSahara Africa.
The lack of job opportunities, caused partly by the Federal Government’s apathy to job creation, the lack of adequate supervision of job opportunities economic programmes, lack of employable skills by many youths in the country have conspired to heighten the attendant challenges of unemployment. The challenges which include, “Japa” syndrome (travelling abroad for greener pastures), that characterises the labour market and poses threat to the nation’s critical sector, especially the health and medical sector; astronomical increase in the crime rate and a loss of interest in education. While job seeking youths should continuously acquire skills and explore opportunities within their immediate environment as well as in the global space through the use of digital platforms, government, corporate/ multinational organizations or the organised private sector should generate skills and provide the enabling environment for skills acquisition, through adequate funding and resettlement packages that will provide sustainable economic life for beneficiaries.
While commending the Rivers State Government led by the People First Governor, Sir Siminilayi Fubara for initiating “various training and capacity-building programmes in areas such as ICT and artificial intelligence, oil and gas, maritime, and the blue economy, among others”, it is note-worthy that the labour market is dynamic and shaped by industry-specific demands, technological advancements, management practices and other emerging factors. So another sector the Federal, State and Local Governments should encourage youths to explore and harness the abounding potentials, in my considered view, is Agriculture. Agriculture remains a veritable solution to hunger, inflation, and food Insecurity that ravages the country. No doubt, the Nigeria’s arable landmass is grossly under-utilised and under-exploited.
In recent times, Nigerians have voiced their concerns about the persistent challenges of hunger, inflation, and the general increase in prices of goods and commodities. These issues not only affect the livelihoods of individuals and families but also pose significant threats to food security and economic stability in the country. The United Nations estimated that more than 25 million people in Nigeria could face food insecurity this year—a 47% increase from the 17 million people already at risk of going hungry, mainly due to ongoing insecurity, protracted conflicts, and rising food prices. An estimated two million children under five are likely to be pushed into acute malnutrition. (Reliefweb ,2023). In response, Nigeria declared a state of emergency on food insecurity, recognizing the urgent need to tackle food shortages, stabilize rising prices, and protect farmers facing violence from armed groups. However, without addressing the insecurity challenges, farmers will continue to struggle to feed their families and boost food production.
In addition, parts of northwest and northeast Nigeria have experienced changes in rainfall patterns making less water available for crop production. These climate change events have resulted in droughts and land degradations; presenting challenges for local communities and leading to significant impact on food security. In light of these daunting challenges, it is imperative to address the intricate interplay between insecurity and agricultural productivity. Nigeria can work toward ensuring food security, reducing poverty, and fostering sustainable economic growth in its vital agricultural sector. In this article, I suggest solutions that could enhance agricultural production and ensure that every state scales its agricultural production to a level where it can cater to 60% of the population.
This is feasible and achievable if government at all levels are intentional driving the development of the agricultural sector which was the major economic mainstay of the Country before the crude oil was struck in commercial quantity and consequently became the nation’s monolithic revenue source. Government should revive the moribund Graduate Farmers Scheme and the Rivers State School-to-Land agricultural programmes to operate concurrently with other skills acquisition and development programmes. There should be a consideration for investment in mechanized farming and arable land allocation. State and local governments should play a pivotal role in promoting mechanized farming and providing arable land for farming in communities. Additionally, allocating arable land enables small holder farmers to expand their operations and contribute to food security at the grassroots level.
Nigeria can unlock the potential of its agricultural sector to address the pressing needs of its population and achieve sustainable development. Policymakers and stakeholders must heed Akande’s recommendations and take decisive action to ensure a food-secure future for all Nigerians.
