Court Inaugurates Four Chairmen, 21 Members
President of the Rivers State Customary Court of Appeal (CCA), Justice l. W. Obuzor, has inaugurated 25 newly appointed chairmen and members of the Customary Court recently appointed by the State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to strengthen the administration of customary arbitration in the State .
Performing the swearing-in ceremony at the auditorium of the court complex, Monday, in Port Harcourt, Justice Obuzor charged the new appointees to see their appointment as a divine mandate to serve God and humanity.
He stressed that by their responsibilities, they should carry out their assignments with the fear of God as his representatives.
“It is spiritual and divine. The work you are coming to do is to represent God, He alone can judge humanity, but has given you all this responsibility to judge, and that is why you should count yourselves opportuned for the rare privilege, and you must work with fear. Out of 300 persons that applied, only 25 of you were taken.
“Pray always that the anointing of God will be upon you, so you can do the right thing. Know that this work is not civil service work or political appointment, but a work of priest and if you misbehave, you will see the repercussions”, he stated.
The State President of CCA advised them not to be radical in the discharge of their responsibilities but to be mindful and always seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit through consistent prayers.
He told them that the customary courts were established in order to address the customary challenges in the society, noting that 80 percent of people live in the rural areas and conduct their activities in line with their customary laws, and hence are expected to be be guided by the customary laws of the people in taking decisions.
“You must conduct your trials and write your judgments in line with customary laws and you must drop the English legal toga and follow the customary laws in your conducts.
“You must stop going to beer parlour, social parties and be ready to lose your close friends, and this is the sacrifice you all must make”, Obuzor charged the new appointees.
While congratulating them on their appointment, he assured them of training and capacity building workshops that would enhance their capacity in job delivery.
