Don Wants Students To Evaluate Teachers, Lecturers
As a way of improving the system of education in the country, a Professor of Educational Measurement and Evaluation at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Prof. Dorothy Inko-Tariah, says there is need for schools to make provision for students to evaluate their lecturers for effective teaching and learning.
“The history of Students’ Evaluation of their Teachers (SET) predates the practice of modern education,” she said.
Inko-Tariah, said this while delivering her lecture at the 45th Inaugural Lecture at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, on the topic: ‘Evaluating the Evaluators: Policy Framework and Practical Consideration’.
“This inaugural lecture seeks to build upon decades of empirical research in educational practices at all levels of Nigerian educational system. Evaluation is the fulcrum upon which education reinvents itself,” she said.
She said including such policy in the higher institutions will provide opportunities for students in evaluating their lecturers which will go a long way to change the bad attitude of a lecturer in terms of teaching students in class.
She further described Students Evaluation of Teachers (SET) as a systematic process by which students provide feedback on the quality and effectiveness of instructors’ teaching methods, courses and the class room environment.
On his part, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Prof Okechuku Onuchuku, represented by Professor Joseph Kelani commended the lecturer and advised that the tool of evaluation must be very objective.
