Assault Video: Police Arrest, Move Three Officers In PH To Abuja

Hours after a video in which some tactical police officers were seen assaulting a man on the Emohua section of the East-West Road, went viral, the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has confirmed the arrest of three officers involved in the incident.
The development came shortly after the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Effiong Okon, ordered the arrest of the officers following a directive from the police authorities in Abuja.
Okon’s orders were contained in a statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, directing immediate arrest of the officers.
Titled, “VIRAL VIDEO: RIVERS POLICE COMMISSIONER ORDERS THE IMMEDIATE ARREST OF POLICE PERSONNEL”, the statement read: “Following the identification of the Policemen shown in a viral video harassing and assaulting an unidentified man at a Elibrade junction, Emohua, the Rivers State Command Commissioner of Police, CP OKon O Effiong, has ordered the immediate arrest of the officers indicated.
“As a defender of human rights, the CP assures members of the public, that the Police Officers will be investigated in line with extant rules underlying the conduct of police personnel; and appropriate sanctions meted accordingly.
“The Command further assures the good people of Rivers State of its unalloyed commitment to promoting the rule of law.
“People are enjoined to report cases of human rights abuse and infractions through the following numbers: 08039213071 and 08098880134.
Speaking on the development, the NPF Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a series of tweets in the late hours of Monday that the policemen had been arrested and would be taken to Abuja on Tuesday (yesterday).
A viral video had surfaced on the social media on Monday, where a policeman stopped a man on the road at Elibrada junction along the East-West Road, near Port Harcourt, and began to assault him.
The video indicated that the police man gave his victim series of slaps, hitting him with a stick while leading him into his vehicle before being driven away by a lady.
The video elicited sharp criticism on social media, making the police object of ferocious acts and condemnation by the public.
According to Adejobi: “These men have been arrested and their commander will personally bring them to the Force Headquarters tomorrow, Tuesday for further actions.
“They are three in number, attached to RRS, Rivers State. Their action does not portray the police in a good light at all.
“You will see the evidence tomorrow. They will be at the Force Headquarters and our actions will be made public. No worries. I don’t think any exposed, disciplined and polished officer will cover this”.
Adejobi further noted that: “We are mindful of the fact that every human being needs mental evaluation on a regular basis. The NP Health Management Office has been up and doing in addressing these mental-related issues, and this is achievable.
“There is no place in our law or act or training manual or curriculum, where slapping or flogging is listed as a measure of arrest or applying minimum force (as stipulated by law), none”.
