Rivers Set To Get 18 New Commissioners …As Assembly Screens, Confirms Wike’s Nominees …Approves Out-Of-Court Move On OML11
The Rivers State House of Assembly, yesterday, screened and cleared 18 commissioner-nominees for appointment into the State Executive Council.
Their screening follows the submission of the commissioner-designates by the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, to the House for confirmation.
At plenary, yesterday, the names of the nominees were read to the House before the respective candidates presented themselves for questioning by 9am.
A statement signed by the Clerk, Rivers State House of Assembly, Stanford Oba, said that the nominees had submitted 35 sets of their credentials to the office of the clerk, and came along with original copies, including tax clearance certificates for the screening.
He listed the new commissioner-designates as Prof. Princewill Chike, Hon. Jacobson Nbina, Mr. Ndubuisi Okere, Barrister Inime Aguma, Engr. Charles Amadi, Mrs. Tonye Oniyinde Briggs, Mr. Ben Daminabo, and Mr. Chris Finebone.
Others were Engr. Austin Ben-Chioma, Mr Uchechukwu Nwafor, Dr. Fred Barivule Kpakol, Barrister Emenike Oke, Mr. Prince Ohia, Prof. Kaniye Ebeku, Mr. Ezekiel Agri, Mrs. Ukiel Oyaghiri, Hon. Damiete Herbert Horsfall, and Hon Emeka Onowu.
Earlier, the Clerk of the Rivers State House of Assembly, had in a statement, invited the nominees to appear before the Assembly on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 by 9am for screening as commissioners-designate.
If sworn-in by the governor, the 18 additional commissioners would join the earlier ones already performing their duties to implement the NEW Rivers Vision Agenda aimed at transforming the state in all sectors.
However, the House has approved the request by Governor Nyesom Wike to explore out-of-court settlement with Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) over Rivers State ownership interest in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 11, and other related oil and gas assets in the state.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, while commenting on the significance of the request said, that negotiations for out-of-court settlement with NNPCL was for the over all interest of Rivers people, and for the growth and development of the state.
Meanwhile, a motion presented by the House Leader, Hon. Martin Amaewhule to commend the Rivers State Government on the steps taken to mitigate effects of flooding on victims in the state and to call for more support received approved the support of all members and subsequently approved for communication to the governor.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
