Reopen Borders, Women Urge Buhari
A prayer group in the Assemblies of God Church, Diobu District, known as the “Esther Group” has called on President Muhammedu Buhari to reconsider opening the country’s borders.
The group also urged the President to lift the ban on importation of certain categories of staple foods into the country in order to mitigate the current food shortage and hunger warranted by flooding across the nation.
It said the current food shortage in the country resulting from flooding has caused regrettable numbers of deaths.
“The situation can be addressed if the President can reconsider the stand on the ban on importation for the sake of lives of many Nigerian families affected”, the group stated.
Speaking in Port Harcourt with The Tide, the group’s national leader, Mrs. Elisabeth Onouha, said the call became necessary because of the attendant effect of flooding across the country.
According to her, if the ban on importation of food such as rice, beans, yam, and other staple foods, it will reduce hunger and starvation facing the nation at the moment.
The women further called on the 36 state governors and members of the National Assembly to see the need in pressurizing the President to reconsider steps in ensuring that the nation’s borders are all open for business until the country is able to find solutions or a way out of the perennial flooding that has resulted in many deaths across the nation.
“As a member of Esther Group, we have been praying for this nation and God has told us to call on our National Assembly Members, 36 State governors, and President Muhammedu Buhari to reopen some of our borders so that certain categories of foods can come in”, the group said.
They assured the President that immediately he heeds the call, “the situation will witness a gradual reduction on the daily death tolls as witnessed in recent time.
“What has happened to the nation is the failure of some government officials to perform their duty at the right time”, they said.
While expressing regret over the loss if lives, and sympathising with all families affected by the flood, they called on “all hands to be on deck for the sake of unity and progress of our nation.”
