Bayelsa Community Protests Killing Of Indigenes
The leadership of Igbomotoru Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, has protested the alleged killings of indigenes of the community by security operatives attached to the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) surveillance contractors.
Sequel to this, the community called on the state government to order the immediate withdrawal of soldiers allegedly stationed in a houseboat in the community.
The community’s leadership stated that the continued presence of soldiers in the community is causing panic, noting that the indigenes and inhabitants of the once peaceful Communitiy are now living in constant fear and nervousness.
Many indigenes of the community are now vacating their homes due to worsening security challenges occasioned by both the surveillance operatives and the continued presence of armed military personnel in the area.
A statement jointly issued by the Acting Paramount Ruler of the Community, Chief Goodluck Alagodei, said the community’s Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman and his Vice, Mr Ebipamunu Charles and Goodnews Otobo repectively, as well as the CDC Secretary, Justice Pronto, and other members of the CDC in conjunction with compound chiefs, stated that about four youths had allegedly been killed previously.
The Igbomotoru community leadership lamented that since June 22, the community has experienced an unprovoked invasion and attack by armed military men allegedly attached to Darlon, a surveillance company contracted by NAOC.
While calling on the state government and security agencies to act fast to ensure the withdrawal of the military, the community’s leadership expressed fear that there will be more killings, maiming and rape of its indigenes, burning of houses and destruction of properties.
It added that 12 youth corps members serving in the community had since left, leaving only three who will most likely leave the community due to the escalating killings.
“Before the invasion and the continued stationing of the military men, the corps members have lived their quiet and peaceful lives in Igbomotoru Community going about fulfilling their primary assignment.
