Making Emohua-Kalabari Road Safer
One of the indices to determine civilisation or the development of a people is good roads. The economic life of a people depend largely on the road. Road provides access to places of business, schools, work places, farms, commercial activities and social life, among several other values. The importance of road to any people cannot be down played.
A journey to Degema, headquarters of Degema Local Government Area, through the Emohua-Degema Road for a private visit, leaves much to be desired. It was discovered that the road is gradually losing its integrity and worthiness.
Pot-holes are virtually everywhere on the long stretch of the road that links some communities in the Degema, Asari-Toru and Akuku-Toru Local Government Areas of the state.
The economic importance of the road to residents and visitors to the local government areas, including Emohua cannot be over emphasised.
The road provides a major access to the weekly Ahiakwo Market strategically located at the boundary between Emohua Local Government Area and the Kalabaris.
People from far and near resort to the market to buy and sell their farm produce.and several other wares every market day, providing a beehive of activities and a hustling and bustling of the road every market day.
For the Kalabaris, the number of vehicles that ply the road on festive periods and high profile burials is very unprecedented and spectacular as the densely populated communities of Buguma, Abonnema, Degema and others are linked by that road.
It is also pertinent to state that the Emohua-Kalabari Road is a carriage way for heavy duty and earth-moving equipment used for construction work in the area.
The road is also of great economic value to traders from over thirty communities in that axis. It provides the only viable access to Port Harcourt and the East-West Road by road; so virtually all those who travel to Port Harcourt, the state capital, Bayelsa and Delta States go through the Emohua-Kalabari Road. A road of such importance and value should not be allowed to deteriorate and dotted with pot-holes.
It is not strange for any person living or doing business in Port Harcourt and its environs to be reminded that that road had been a flash point, volatile and notorious for kidnapping, robbery and other criminal activities.
Several people had lost their lives in the kidnappers’ enclave after ransom had been paid by their relatives while other unfortunate travellers who were caught in the web of the notorious gang had lost valuables and paid heavily to regain their freedom. These dastardly acts which were affronts to the sensibility of road users – and carried on with impunity, had posed great threat to lives and property so much so that there was a lull in the use of the road.
However, the security concern that the robbery and kidnap incidents created informed the drafting of military personnel to strategic positions of the road to stem the trend. A couple of weeks ago, the military men on lawful duty on the road were reportedly attacked by unknown gunmen and one military men was killed in cold blood and unprovoked attack.
The murder of the innocent security personnel has further heightened apprehension in the road users, making the road less busy which is a significant departure from its former beehive nature.
Allowing the potholes and ditches to remain will no doubt, exacerbate the criminality that the road users-face.
“Self preservation”, they say, “is the first law of nature”. With such preservation instinct, it is natural to boycott the use of that road because no right-thinking and level-headed person would like to face embarrassment and humiliation from hoodlums who have no regard for the sanctity of human life.
The state has done a lot to stem the trend of criminality that characterised the road through its Operation Sting security outfit that left no stone unturned in arresting and prosecuting those involved in criminal and nefarious activities
The planned relocation of a faculty of the Rivers State University to the abandoned model security school for Emohua Local Government Area, built by the previous administration in the state further lends support to the state Governor’s commitment to beef up security in the area.
Already, several of the structures to house the faculty have been remodelled and rehabilitated. The infrastructure is being given a facelift that befits an ivory tower.
With the proposed relocation of the Faculty, it is reasonable to believe that the State Government would further improve security in the area and make the Emohua-Kalabari Road an express for road users, though the responsibility to maintain and rehabilitate the road is the Federal Government’s.
Infrastructural development will naturally spread to Emohua-Kalabari Road axis as it is not saying a new thing that academic institutions are catalysts and harbinger of growth of society.
However, a peaceful and tranquil environment is a necessity to facilitate such growth.
The Chairmen of Emohua, Degema, Asari-Toru and Akuku-Toru LGAs should not rest on their oars in complementing the efforts of the state government in providing adequate security to their subjects.
As chief security officers, it is their statutory obligation to guarantee the protection of lives and property of those who live within their jurisdictions.
They should do all within their powers to make the road safe for its users. After all, the primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property.
