FG Okays Abba Kyari’s Extradition To US
The Federal Government has approved the extradition to the United States of the detained former head of the Police Intelligence Response Team, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari.
The request for his extradition was made by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) of the United States over the $1.1million Internet fraud perpetrated by Abass Ramon (aka Hushpuppi) and four others.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), yesterday in Abuja, filed an application before the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for Kyari’s extradition.
The application marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/249/2022 was filed under the Extradition Act.
Malami hinged the application on a request by the Diplomatic Representative of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja.
The request is “for the surrender of Abba Alhaji Kyari, who is a subject in a superseding three counts indictment.”
Kyari is currently in the custody of the NDLEA over 25kg of cocaine deal.
Malami had recently disclosed that a prima facie case had been established against Kyari.
The minister noted that though investigations were still ongoing, he, however, declared that there were enough grounds to extradite Kyari to the U.S.
He said, “There are lots of considerations that are ongoing, including the possibility of extradition. That is why the collaboration element comes in. There could be a need for extradition.
“As far as I am concerned, parties are discussing; we are collaborating and there are exchanges of correspondence. Reasonable ground of suspicion has been established and that will eventually translate into prosecution and eventual conviction.
“The position now is that there are prima facie grounds, reasonable grounds for suspicion have been considered from the perspective of prosecution, from the perspective of extradition if the need for it arises.”
