Wike, Ikpeazu Canvass National Cohesion, Inclusion
Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike and his counterpart from Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu have canvassed for cohesion and inclusion as way out to curb the security challenges in the country.
The Chief Wike speaking through his deputy, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo at the 3rd National Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists((NUJ) on Monday in Port Harcourt said the unity of the country is under threat from ethnicity and poor leadership.
Chief Wike said the lopsidedness in appointment into key national positions coupled with inaction from leaders in tackling security challenges worsens the situation in the country.
In his words, “The theme of your conference is germane. Its amazing that this nation with it enormous resources is still backward. “
The Rivers State governor said it was high time efforts are made to chart new course by creating “ equilibrium in the polity by giving every group a sense of belonging.
Wike welcomed members of the NUJ for choosing Rivers state, and assured that the state is safe and secure for citizens.
Speaking on the theme of the conference, “ The Media , Insecurity and National Unity” Abia State State governor averred that the media has huge role to play to achieve national cohesion.
He identified communication gap, propaganda and giving prominence to divisive issues as a major cause to violence and insecurity.
“ the security gap further devaluates the national structure and stability of the nation. The media can rise and refocus this conversation “ Ikpeazu said.
He asserted further that,” the media need to interrogate to find out the truth. The culture of sweeping issues of discontent under the carpet leads to smouldering fire of divisiveness.”
