RSG To Partner Association On Coconut Initiative
The Rivers State Government has commended the initiative of a group known as National Coconut Producers Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NACOPPMAN) for xploring the potentials of coconut as an agricultural product.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Fred Kpakol gave the commendation during a visit by the association to the Ministry of Agriculture for the flag-off of the 2021 coconut planting season under the theme,“Actualising Coconut Sufficiency in Nigeria”.
The Commissioner, who was represented by Mr Maurice Ogolo said the initiative was in line with the economic diversification policy of the Rivers State Government with key interest in the agricultural sector.
He said the Rivers State Government has invested much in the Agricultural sector adding that the government would partner with the body to promote the initiative.
In her remarks, the State Chairman of the organisation, Barrister (Mrs) Ngozi Ajayi, said the body has a mandate to actualise coconut sufficiency in Nigeria by the year 2027.
She described coconut as not only a commercial tree but that it also has great health and nutritious values.
She pointed out that the target was to plant at least three coconut trees for every family, noting that the policy would be domesticated to all parts of the country, particularly in the rural areas that have the mass arable land for commercial agriculture.
On his part, the Rivers State Head of Service, Barrister Rufus Godwins described the initiative as a profitable venture. The Head of Service who was represented by Mrs Inyingi Brown urged Civil Servants in the State to key into the initiative as part of measures of preparing for their retirement.
