Orphanage Seeks Support For 180 Displaced Children In Rivers
A non-governmental organisation (NGO), the Lurther Welfare for Children At-Risk Development Centre, Eteo in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, has called for suport and partnership from state governments, private organisations, churches and philanthropists for the development and empowerment as well as care of over 180 children currently receiving care at the centre.
The Executive Director of the centre, and a serving priest with the Lurther Church of Nigeria, Rev. Nicholas Iloh, made the appeal while speaking with journalists in Eleme Local Government Area of the State on the sidelines of the just concluded 2021 Children’s Day celebration in the state.
Iloh explained that the centre was being over-stretched by the influx of displaced children across various parts of the state occasioned by cult and communal crises, adding that the centre was in dire need of patronage and assistance from members of the public in order to continue in the care of the children.
According to him, his passion to establish the centre was his drive to bequeath formal education to indigent and vulnerable children, who are unable to care for themselves in the society, saying that due to the incessant crisis rocking the Ogoni axis of the State, the number is increasing daily.
The cleric opined that the centre, in addition to enhancing the educational standard of the children had introduced innovative and transformative skills to make them self reliant to create wealth for themselves in areas of using plastic rubbers compressed with sand to make a fire and bullet proof plastic house which according to him is the first of its kind across the Niger Delta region.
“The major challenge confronting the centre is the increasing number of children and the burden of caring for them outweighs our personal efforts and contributions to the centre”
He therefore called on well meaning individuals, governments and NGOs to partner with the centre to alleviate the suffering of the children, even as he used the opportunity to appreciate the support and assistance the centre had enjoyed from the King of Eteo, Emere E T .K Alone and other well spirited individuals and groups in the area, he said.
