Expert Wants More Police Stations In Etche, Omuma
A retired Navy Commander, Ben Onukw-uru has called for the increase of police stations in Etche and Omuma Local Government Areas of Rivers State to 20.
Onukwuru also said the five police stations covering the two local government areas were grossly inadequate to effectively combat and fight crimes in these two LGAs, and added that a concerted effort be made to increase the number of police stations to at least 20.
He made this assertion while speaking with journalists at the just concluded one-day retreat tagged “Setting the Agenda” organised by the Ogbakor Etche, the apex socio-cultural organi-sation of Etche ethnic nationality held at Igwuruta, in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the State, Monday.
He stressed the need to engage the youths of the area in positive and meaningful ventures in order to stop them from committing crimes, and added that the youths constitute 60 percent of the population in the area.
According to him, the crimes are being perpetrated by the youths and added that positive engagement would address the challenge.
“Insecurity has to do with both physical and economic well-being of humans. These kidnapping, cultism and other crimes going on in these areas are being done and committed by the youths and they have over 60 percent of the entire population,” he stated.
The security expert who is an indigene of Etche lauded the efforts the local vigilante, otherwise called ESP-AC are making in complementing the efforts of the security operatives in the area.
Onukwuru called on the police to work in synergy with the ESPAC in order to effectively police the LGAs.
, adding that intelligence gathering and sharing are necessary for the police and the community vigilantee to win the war against the criminalities across Etche and Omuma communities
“When ESPAC make any arrest, they should hand it to the police for prosecution. The community policing is necessary gathering of intelligence reports.
People must involve in security and should not be left for government alone, we have whistle blowers, landlords, community must profile persons residing in their areas.
“A trust fund should be established and manage by people for purpose of achieving security in the area,” he stated.
He used the opportunity to thank the leadership of the Ogbakor Etche ethnic Nationality, adding that, if the resolutions and suggestions were implemented, it would help to bring solutions to many challenges confronting the ethnic nationality.
