RSG Set To Clamp Down On Illegal Dredging Activities

The Rivers State Government has said it would commence the enforcement of authorized laws relating to dredging and ecological disasters arising from government activities in the state.
This was made known by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Igbiks Tamuno, during an interactive session between officials of the Rivers State Ministry of Environment and dredging, sand mining and reclamation practice stakeholders in the state.
Tamuno stated that there were requirements, certifications and permits to be obtained from the Ministry of Environment authorizing dredging activities, but noted that more often than not, individuals and companies go ahead to dredge and mine sand close to jetties, bridges and structures that they should protect, without approval from the ministry.
He reiterated that indiscriminate and unlawful dredging and sand mining activities were major causes of environmental hazards, warning that such acts must stop forthwith.
The commissioner insisted that all practitioners in the sector must comply with the directive of the Government of Rivers State, under the leadership of Chief Nyesom Wike.
“The ministry has the capacity to ensure every dredging activity that is not done according to the authorized law faces legal charges and prosecution”, he added.
The commissioner said there were certain fees required to be paid before indulging into dredging activities, and environmental experts would advise on possible and safe sites for dredging and sand mining, stressing that all laws relating to environmental protection must be obeyed.
He said government would, henceforth, ensure that only those operators that adhere to the stipulated guidelines would be allowed to operate; adding that all companies, individuals, stakeholders and third party operators who fail to follow the laws guiding dredging activities would be held culpable, and would face the law.
Tamuno advised all stakeholders in the dredging and mining activities to pay their fees, and be certified before operation through the Rivers State Ministry of Environment as required.
Those who participated in the interactive session include representatives from the Federal Ministry of Environment.
