‘Nigeria’s Problem Is Leadership, Not Multi-Ethnicity’
The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has identified leadership as the major problem of Nigeria.
A statement in commemoration of Nigeria’s 60th Independence Anniversary, said despite the myriad of challenges, citizens have hobbled the realisation of the country’s lofty potential.
It noted that the Nigeria of dream is possible, notwithstanding the problems.
The organisation expressed optimism that the diversity of Nigeria can be built on to become a source of strength, despite fears that multi-ethnicity is the source of unending sectarian conflicts and instability.
The CDD stressed that the same problems of insecurity, hunger, poverty, malnutrition, maternal mortality, lack of infrastructure and human rights abuse, are what everyone faces irrespective of areas of origin.
“The problem is the lack of leadership and the right framework for governance. The right leadership can harness the diversity, creativity and boundless energies of the Nigerian population and make these attributes the basis of a strong, stable and efficient federation.”
The CDD said the energy being expended by separatist groups to break up of the country, would be better applied to uniting the country and making it work for the good of all.
The body charged Nigerians to participate in electoral processes, and get their voices heard to ensure democracy delivers on governance.
“60 years after the attainment of independence, Nigeria’s democracy should begin to head in the direction of delivering quality, efficient and effective social goods and services to the long-suffering citizens of our country”, the statement added.
