Group Urges FG To Build Factories
The President of Transparent Leadership Initiative International (TLI), Prof Onyeche Obinna, has called on the Federal Government to learn how to borrow to build factories and not infrastructures, if it is desirous of bailing its economy from its fragile nature.
Prof Obinna, made the statement while briefing the members of Energy and Maritime Practitioners of Nigeria ( MEMPON), at the weekend in Port Harcourt.
The TLI President, who directed his suggestion to government at all levels, said that the country’s economy would continue to dwindle, until the country’s leadership learn how to borrow to grow the economy and not infrastructures.
According to him, building more infrastructures in a country can not remove such nation from the importing to exporting position.
He said that the rhythm must be changed by totally embracing the concept of agriculture.
“Every importing economy is a dying economy, whereas, every exporting economy is a growing economy, we must convert from importing to exporting through agriculture”, he said.
To encourage agricultural practice, he pointed out that the Federal Government must invest huge capital into the sector with a high level monitoring team to oversee the funds so released into the sector.
Prof Obinna who is also a leading farmer in Etche ethnic nationality, blamed part of the corruption experienced in the country on what he tagged “hunger slavery”.
He was of the view that it would be difficult for a hungry man to maintain his integrity, thus the need to be self reliant.
“You must also discourage the mentality of procuring everything from the market. That mentality cum practice is killing the economy”, he added.
The farmer further warned that hunger may soon take over the land, if concerned authorities did not take necessary steps to promote the agricultural sector.
On the alleged invasion by herdsmen on the farms and its crops, he said it was wrong, and called on locals to learn how to use “traditional means” to protect their farms and crops , as no Inspector General of Police could win the battle alone, due to its complex nature.
