Provost Advocates Reforms In Irrigation Farming
The Provost of Abia State College of Education (Technical) in Arochukwu, Dr Philips Nto, has advised engineers to effect reforms in irrigation farming for food security and its sustainability.
Nto, in an interview with The Tide’s source in Umuahia yesterday, said there was no way the country could feed itself on rain-fed agriculture.
According to the former Commissioner of Finance in Abia, irrigation influences higher productivity and protects the environment.
He described water as a very important component in food production, adding that the estimated surface water of 267.7 billion cubic and under surface water of 57.9 billion cubic in Nigeria was being simply wasted.
The provost said:”the water/land ratio in Nigeria is reasonable and ought to have facilitated huge agricultural production, but rainfall is all about what the smaller-holder farmers depend on.”
“To ensure effective irrigation and drainage system, check soil erosion and degradation, the engineers must be involved.
“Their expertise is needed to reverse the current pitiable state where only one out of three of food production comes from one out of six of arable land that is naturally irrigated.”
He called for collaboration between engineers and the government to drive the suggested reforms with a view to ensuring that mechanisation, soil and water conservation engineering were applied for sustained food security.
