AWELGA Inaugurates Four Camps For Flood Victims
The authorities of Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State have confirmed that four recreational camps have been established to accommodate victims, who may be forced to evacuate their homes due to flooding in the area.
The Chairman of the 2019 AWELGA Flood Committee, Hon Ageri Ezekiel disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting hosted by the council Chairman, Hon Hope Ikiriko at Akinima, headquarters of the LGA over the weekend.
He explained the proactive measures put in place by the administration Ikiriko to address the challenges of flood in the local government area.
Ageri said the camps were established at Ubeta, Okogbe, Mbiama and Akinima communities, adding that the relocation of the affected victims would begin, today.
According to him, the present administration was committed to assisting the victims with temporary place of succour, and urged them to remain calm as efforts were being made to ameliorate their sufferings.
Earlier in his speech, the Chairman of the council, Hon Hope Ikiriko called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist the people with relief materials, adding that flood has destroyed both farmlands and aquatic lives, which he said, were major sources of livelihood to the people.
Ikiriko averred that the presence of NEMA has not been felt in the area since flood submerged most parts of the local government area in the last few weeks.
“We have done enough to reduce the effect of the flood on the people.
“We are carrying out vigorous campaign, sensitization, and establishment of four camps, provision of water and electricity, among others, which are capital intensive to the council.
“The lives of our people are too important to us. So, we are not worried about attending to them at this critical time.
