As the jostle to occupy the 15 available positions in the Executive and Standing Committees of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) for the next three years, the Election Committee has cleared 23 persons to contest the various positions while disqualifying five others, in a shred political campaign that has seen 28 Editors compete for leadership of the elite club of senior journalists.
A preliminary report released, last Wednesday, the Secretary of the NGE Election Committee, Gbemiga Ogunleye, said the committee met last “Tuesday at the Editors’ House, Ikeja, Lagos, to screen nominations for election into the Executive Council and the Standing Committee, holding during the Biennial Convention scheduled for May 03- 05 2019 in Lagos.

The committee said that at the end of the screening exercise, it cleared Mrs. Funke Egbemode to contest for a second term as president while Mr. Steve Osuji was disqualified by Article 3 of the Constitution, just as it cleared both Umar Saidu Tudunwada and Chooks Ogbonnaya Oko to slug it out for the position of deputy president.
The committee further said that both Hajia Sani and Sanusi Jibrin have met criteria to contest for the office of vice president (North); while clearing Samuel Egbala and Dom O. However, Charles Eze Anaba, who is also contesting for Standing Committee Member (West) was not cleared, but was asked the committee ‘to submit letter of appointment as Editor’ before a decision could be reached in his case.
The committee also requested “all contestants, both those cleared to contest and those yet-to- be cleared, to appear before it at 10am on Friday, May 3, 2019, at the Airport Hotel, Lagos, venue of the Biennial Convention, with original copies of their letters of appointment as editors for verification”.
