Rivers Monarchs Decry Military Invasion
The Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has expressed disappointment over the alleged involvement of the military and officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the electioneering process of the 2019 elections.
The Royals Fathers also condemned the violence and breach of the peace which culminated into several deaths in some communities in the state.
The Chairman of the Council and the Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, made the condemnation during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, last Monday.
According to him “ let the Bloodletting and carnage stop, the people’s will should prevail”.
King Jaja frowned that the state was turned into a theatre of war by some desperate politicians and their military collaborators, and that as traditional rulers, they were committed to ensuring that peace reigned supreme in their domains.
He expressed dismay that a few government appointees had been using their apparatus including uniform men to cause chaos and breakdown of law and order, pointing out that some people of the state who had attempted to resist such illegality were either being arrested or dealt with extra judicially.
According to him, communities have been massively militerised, innocent people harassed, intimidated, arrested and detained.
The Rivers State Traditional Rulers Chairman also expressed sadness that in many kingdoms and communities, the military men were allegedly involved in giving cover to politicians and their thugs to cart away ballot boxes and result sheet, and called on the Nigerian Army to immediately identify and arrest those political thugs in military uniforms.
“ There are also allegations that some of these uniformed personnel are “ fake soldiers” but the real soldiers have not arrested any of the so called fake soldiers involved in these dastardly acts”, King Jaja noted, adding that the Army has also come out on AIT last Monday to state that the people in Army uniforms are fake. So, why are they not being arrested if they are thugs.
