Industrialist Wants FG To Immortalise King Jaja
The King Jaja of Opobo has been described as the catalyst of the resource control struggles in Nigeria.
Speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt, an industrialist, Dr. Reuben Mietamuno Jaja, disclosed that the struggle of resource control in the country was the baby of King Jaja. The industrialist said King Jaja kickstarted the agitation when colonialists decided to meddle into the internal affairs of his kingdom in particular and Nigeria in general.
According to him, “King Jaja was whisked away from the shores of Niger Delta region, because he refused to be intimidated over what God Almighty had bequeathed to him and the good people of Opobo. Hence, peace was restored immediately he was exiled by the European merchants who intended to use intimidation and all manners of atrocities to capture the endowed natural resources of the people”.
As he puts it, “the King at that time quenched what would have caused Niger Deltans nay Nigerians devastation and genocide if he had not succumbed to the dreaded inhuman maltreatment as exhibited by the European merchants through that unwholesome behaviours. We must appreciate him for that great bravery and dexterity he exhibited in the course of protecting Nigeria’s endowed natural resources, such as; oil, phosphate, silica and many others”.
Jaja maintained that due to the King’s refusal to allow the Europeans’ intrusion into the Niger Delta for tapping of their God-given natural resources, they broke his back by whisking him away, noting that though God made the place and said man has dominion over it. “When the white men came and broke his back only for them to intrude and eventually invaded the resources, he still bent on not allowing them to penetrate much further to avoid destruction of the people’s lives and property.”
Dr. Jaja stressed that King Jaja prevented European merchants from encroaching to the hinterlands where these resources were found, due largely to their inordinate ambition to deny the people of what God had given.
Jaja, however, urged the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari to immortalise the sacrifices made by King Jaja of Opobo for posterity.
