Wike Bemoans Plight Of N’Delta People
Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has expressed worry that the people of the oil- rich Niger Delta region are dying just for Nigeria to survive.
The governor stated this, Friday when the Minister of Environment, Mr Suleiman Hassan Zarma paid him a courtesy visit in Government House, Port Harcourt.
Wike decried the deliberate neglect of the region despite the obvious fact that the region is suffering untold environmental hardship for keeping the country afloat.
The governor said: “ We are dying because we are keeping the country alive. Nobody wants to give us the attention required. These people who are suffering because of the nation’s survival, why not give them priority to survive?”
Wike who expressed his support for the fight against insurgency, stated that nothing is worse than environmental pollution.
He urged the federal government to withdraw funds from the Excess Crude Account to address the environmental challenges in Ogoni land just as was done when it withdrew $1billion to fight insurgency.
“ They took $1billion from the Excess Crude Account to fight insurgency. I say they should take $500 million from the Excess Crude Account for the Ogoni clean up exercise.
He said that the Ogoni clean up exercise has been politicised, stressing that the Federal ,Ministry of Environment has come to hand over sites to contractors three years after the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo flagged off the exercise and wondered why the two activities took place when elections approached.
He said: “ Three years ago, the president , represented by the vice president flagged off the clean up during the rerun elections. One month to the general elections, the minister of Environment has come to hand over the sites.
“If I tell you I believe sincerely that you people want to clean up Ogoni land, I am telling you lies. Surprise me and prove me wrong”.
He called on the minister of Environment to investigate cases of deduction of funds from contracts awarded for the clean up exercise.
The governor who assured the minister of the support of Rivers State Government to achieve the goals of remediation of polluted Ogoni environment.
He further urged the Ministry of Environment to ensure that befitting communities are patronised during the clean up exercise and that all the approved steps were taken by Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project .

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
