Don, Commissioner Task Govt On Good Governance
President, African Leadership Institute (ALI), Prof. Iyorwuese Hagher has called for the removal of some sections of the constitution that are not working.
Hagher made the call yesterday in Lagos at an outreach event organised by a group – “Taking All Men Brother’’, – entitled; “Nigeria: A Nation In Need of Healing’’.
“Let all Nigerian leaders rise to the true call of leadership which is responsibility.
“They should love the people they claim to be ruling and those people who are hurting, not be prevented from expressing their heart.
“Let us listen to people dispassionately and empathise with their challenges.
“Let us take every Nigerian as a brother; we are all Nigerian citizens.
“In 1963, we accepted to be a republic. Let us restructure; let us make our constitution workable.
“Restructuring means taking a hard look at that constitution and expunging the parts of the constitution that are not justiciable and make everything justiciable.
“Especially Section 6, subsection 6 (c) should be expunged, so that we can hold the government accountable.
“If they don’t provide free education, they should be held accountable.
“If they (government) do not provide the health, we should hold government accountable,’’ Hagher said.
Also speaking, Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr Abdul-Lateef Abdul-Hakeem, urged government functionaries and institutions to wake up to their responsibilities in order to overcome the challenges facing the country.
He said that it required collective efforts to solve the problems of the country.
“All hands must be on deck. It has never been this difficult, because it keeps getting more complex.
“Nigerians generally fail to understand that it is not about the particular functionary, is about all of us.
“For example, the present regime needs to speak the same language in all structures of government.
“It requires all institutions in Nigeria to wake up to their responsibility,’’ Abdul-Hakeem said.
