Take Over Monorail, Activist Tells FG …Demands N’Delta Republic
The Federal Government has been called upon to take over and complete the monorail project in Rivers State to improve its transport programme as well as ensure that the billions of Naira committed to the project is not wasted.
In doing so, the government should also re-route the project to enable it serve the three senatorial districts of the state.
Rivers State elder statesman and Niger Delta activist, Sokari Soberekon who made the call weekend in an interview with The Tide called on the Minister of Transport, Chibuike Amaechi to inherit the project and secure federal government approval for its funding and completion.
Sokari note that so much money was invested in the project and it was only fair and proper that Amaechi who initiated it, should use his vantage position as Transport Minister to convert it to a federal project and complete it.
“I appealed to President Buhari to make Amaechi a minister and he granted my request. So it is for Amaechi to make monorail work,” he said.
According to the Niger Delta activist, the route of the monorail should be redesigned to benefit people of the three senatorial zones of the State.
Sokari however pleaded that in redesigning the route of the monorail and putting it to use, care should be exercised to reduce to the barest minimum, the demolition of buildings.
Meanwhile, Sokari has called on the Federal Government to restructure the Nigerian Federation to facilitate the creation of the Niger Delta Republic.
He said that after 50 years in a federation that had marginalized Rivers State who crude oil and hydrocarbon resources are the major financier of the nation, it was time to be granted a Niger Delta Republic.
“God told Moses after the Israelites had been 40 years in Egypt, to tell Pharaoh to let His people go. God has asked me to demand that after 50 years in the Nigerian Federation, Rivers State should be given Niger Delta republic, without violence or shooting,” the Activist said.
According to him, the Niger Delta Republic, when created, will accommodate all Nigerians who want to belong to it.
“All local government areas will become states. We will welcome all who want to be part of us. We will also be friendly with neighbours as America is friendly with Russia and Turkey,” Sokari said.
