Democracy Now In Recession – Lawmaker
The former Speaker of the
Rivers State House of Assembly and the lawmaker-elect for Andoni State Constituency in the last December 10th re-run elections in Rivers State, Rt Hon Ikuimyi Awaji Ibani, has said that Nigeria has returned to the days of dictatorship and autocracy.
He said that he contested election in Andoni under fascism in the re-run election due to the level of intimidation and harassment by security and military personnel.
Ibani, who was speaking to airport correspondents, last Friday on his arrival from Abuja after he had received the certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said the military was deployed against his people and the electorate in Andoni.
“Even when I won the election, INEC refused to declare me elected and returned. My people protested, and soldiers opened fire on them, shot five of them, and my nephew, Justice Ibani, as we speak, is in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
“I want the world to verify this information. I contested election, but not election per se, but I went to war in Andoni. I have not seen this type of thing in my life.
“It is my hope that such would not repeat any more. Today, the Andoni people have secured justice from the hands of the Federal Government, INEC and the military deployed to kill Andoni people.
“Democracy in Nigeria is now in recession and all that have been done in the past years to build democracy is now being destroyed.
“I have just received this certificate of return with cautious optimism. It is not yet Uhuru for my people, because my people can not suffer under the “Jack boots” of the military guns and hardwares, Ibani said”
