Stakeholders Disagree Over IAUE VC’s Appointment
The Academic Staff Union
of Universities (ASUU), and Senior Staff Union of Universities (SSANU), at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Port Harcourt as well as the Acting Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Samuel Kinanee, have appealed to the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike and the state House of Assembly, to consider reducing the number of years that an aspirant for the office of the institution’s vice chancellor should have been a professor, from 10 years as proposed in the amendment bill before the Assembly to five.
In a joint memo presented by Comrade Obi Uchendu at the public hearing organized, Wednesday, by the Education Committee at the Assembly complex, the ASUU and SSANU of the IAUE, argued that pitching the number of years that one must have been a professor at 10, will mean that staff of the young university who are far from the benchmark will be excluded for a long time, meaning that their vice chancellors will be coming from the outside.
Speaking earlier at the public hearing, Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Martin Amaewhule, who represented the speaker, said the initiative was the second amendment of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education law, adding that the bill has passed through first and second readings, and now at public hearing stage. Amaewhule further explained that while members of the House can sponsor bills, the governor can also send bills, adding that an executive bill seeking the amendment of the IAUE law was sent to the House by Governor Nyesom Wike in order to bring the principal law in tune with current realities.
