‘Denton-West’s Record, Indelible’
The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike says the track record of retired Justice Sotonye Denton-West will remain indelible in the history of the state Judiciary, Rivers State and Nigeria at large.
Wike made the remarks while speaking at the public presentation of three books written by the eminent jurist at the state High Court Complex, Port Harcourt.
The governor, who was represented by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Emmanuel Aguma (SAN), said Justice Denton-West delivered several well- researched and brilliant judgments which contributed to the development of the diverse areas of law while serving on the bench.
Wike described Justice Denton West as a bold, courageous and fearless jurist, who developed a keen interest and awareness of the use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms such as negotiation, mediation and arbitration in solving disputes, and commended her for adding knowledge to the legal profession.
In her remarks, the Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, described retired Justice Denton-West as a personal friend and an elder sister, whose antecedents speak volume.
Represented by her Senior Special Assistant on Administration, Barr. Gilbert Nria, Banigo used the occasion to call on parents to train the girl-child as education is a veritable tool for the protection of the girl child and emancipation of women from obnoxious customs that are detrimental to their well-being and existence.
She commended the outstanding contributions of retired Justice Denton West to the legal profession, and urged women organizations, especially NAWOJ and FIDA to ensure the circulation of the books to make them available and accessible to young girls as they will act as catalyst in spurring them to greatness.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the occasion and Legal Luminary, Chief O. C. J. Okocha (SAN) described retired Justice Denton-West as one who has dedicated herself to the service of the State and nation without any blemish.
Earlier, the author of the books, Triumph of Integrity, Via Iuris, and Compendium of Judgments, retired Justice Sotonye Denton-West thanked God for His grace upon her life and the privilege to serve humanity through her chosen profession.
