RSG Begins Technical Schools’ Revamp

In fulfillment of his campaign promises, Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has commenced rehabilitation of technical schools in the State.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Technical Education Matters, Prof Israel Owate, gave the hint in a chat with The Tide at the weekend in Port Harcourt.
According to him, rehabilitation of Government Craft Centre on Aba Road, Government technical School, in Trans-Amadi, and the newly established School for Craft and Vocational Training at Port Harcourt Primary School in Old GRA, will soon take-off.
Owate said, “we have been working silently in the past year to see how we can put these schools back to what they used to be, our governor, by October, will open one of them, but for now, we want to put them to shape first”.
He explained that already, the plan to refit the schools laboratories have begun, adding that each of the schools will have areas of specialty.
“The one at Trans-Amadi, will be for woodwork, we have started refitting the laboratory with all necessary equipment so that students can learn carpentary and furniture making. The Government Craft Centre is for electronics, and we are putting everything in order”, Owate disclosed.
He further stated that the newly established School for Craft and Vocational Training at Old GRA will soon commence, but that government wants to ensure that all the machineries and equipment are put in order before students’ admission.
The governor’s Special Adviser said the action is to leave a legacy, as he lamented the dwindling level of technical manpower in the state and country in general.
The Tide recalls that already, the Chief Nyesom Wike-led administration has commenced reviving school boarding system in state-owned grammar schools across the state.
The new plan, in the state governor’s view will improve quality education, and return some of the schools abandoned by previous administrations to their old status as citadels of learning.
