World Skills Day: Look Inwards, Banigo Tells Youth
As the global community commemorates this year‘s World Youth Skills Day, Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has enjoined the youth to look inward and explore their God-given talents in order to impact positively on the society.
In a statement through her Press Secretary, Paul Damgbor, Banigo described as pathetic and worrisome the International Labour Organisation’s report in 2015, that over 73 million young people are estimated to be unemployed with the figure expected to rise by 2017.
She attributed the rate of unemployment to the spate of crime in the country, and called on the Federal Government to introduce policies that would check downsizing of the workforce, especially in the private sector.
The deputy governor advised the youth in the state to key into the various programmes of government aimed at redirecting their orientation and energies towards profitable ventures.
She said that due to the importance the Governor Nyesom Wike-led administration attaches to youth development, the governor has approved the hosting of the 2016 National Youth Council Congress in Port Harcourt, and urged the youth to shun negative tendencies such as cultism and kidnapping to ensure that Rivers State is conducive and attractive for investors.
The World Youth Skills Day, which was inaugurated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of investing in youth skills development and promoting skills as a means of addressing the challenges of unemployment.
