The Rivers State Governor,
Chief Nyesom Wike has charged participants in the 2016 World Schools Debating Championship to put in their best to win the championship.
He gave the charge recently during a reception held for the contingents to the championship who are on a five-day training in Port Harcourt.
Governor Wike, who was represented by the State Commissioner for Education, Professor Kaniye Ebeku, expressed delight over the state hosting Team Nigeria during the training exercise.
In spite of this, however, he expressed displeasure over the fact that students from the state were not among the Nigerian team, but assured that everything possible will be done to ensure that students from the state participate in the 2017 edition.
Speaking at the occasion, which was held at the Port Harcourt Polytechnic, the National Coordinator of the President’s School Debate, Dare Oritu, said the aim of the debate was to promote the use of dialogue to solve issues.
According to him, the Choice of Rivers State being picked for the training has to do with the fact that over the years, the State has been known to be at the forefront in education.
On their part, some of the Team Nigeria students are from Ebonyi, Kaduna and Anambra States, expressed optimism to win the coveted trophy at the end of the Championship scheduled to hold in Germany.
The Tide gathered that the Federal Government is making effort to host the annual championship in 2018.
