‘Rivers Committed To Protection Non-Indigenes’

The Rivers State Government has restated its commitment to protect and promote the right of non-indigenes residing and doing business in the state.
The State Deputy Governor, Dr Ipalibo Harry Banigo, who made the remark yesterday when members of the Islamic Sisters Association of Nigeria (ISAN), Rivers State chapter paid her a courtesy visit at Government House, Port Harcourt, said the Governor Nyesom Wike-led administration is poised to foster peaceful co-existence and provide good governance for the people.
Banigo stressed that there is the need for Nigerians to unite and give peace a chance irrespective of their religious or political differences.
She said the state government would continue to partner with organisations such as the Islamic Sisters Association to put an end to harmful traditional practices which include child marriage, rape and other forms of violence against women and the girl-child.
The deputy governor expressed happiness with the prevailing peaceful co-existence between Christians and Moslems in the state, and urged the Islamic Sisters Association of Nigeria not to relent in instilling good moral virtues into the young ones to prepare them as agents of positive change.
Banigo commended members of the association for their resilience for being the voice of women, and called for more women participation in political activities so that they can contribute their quota to the development of the society.
Earlier in her address, the President of Islamic Sisters Association of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter, Hajiya Maryam Nasiru lauded Wike for the appointment of Muslims into positions of authority and for putting the state on the fast lane of infrastructural development.
She also solicited the empowerment of Muslim women in the state.
