Ex-Maritime Authority’s DG Wants Restructuring Of NIMASA
A former Director-
General of the defunct National Maritime Authority (NMA), Mr John Egesi, on Thursday called for the restructuring of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to discharge its responsibilities properly.
Egesi made the call in an interview with our correspondent in Lagos.
The Tide reports that the merger of the NMA and the Joint Maritime Labour Industrial Council (JOMALIC) metamorphosed into NIMASA in 2006.
The former director-general expressed the regret that the agency (NIMASA), which was charged with ensuring proper administration and safety of the maritime industry had lost focus owing to inefficiency.
Egesi, a maritime economist, said that rather than fulfilling its mandate for the development of the industry, “the agency was reduced to a theatre of scandals by official corruption”.
“NIMASA which used to be the pride of the nation has unfortunately lost focus and has now been enmeshed by so many crises and scandals.
“He said it is time to restore the agency to its original course by those in charge. It is time we take the right steps to reposition the agency.”
Egesi urged the agency`s Director-General, Mr Dakuku Peterside, to chart the way forward for NIMASA to drive the development of the maritime industry.
The maritime economist suggested that the director-general could call a meeting of experts and past heads of the agency to brainstorm on some of the agency’s challenges with a view to strengthen its operations.
Egesi further said that there was the need to divorce politics from the affairs of the agency to enable it function properly.
On Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF), he said the government should ensure that the funds were disbursed to indigenous investors, who genuinely wanted to acquire ships for increased local participation in the maritime industry.
He urged government to monitor the funds after its release to ensure it was not diverted to other uses by eventual beneficiaries.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
