The Nigeria Union of
Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) said it would train 2,800 petroleum tanker drivers in its unit to ensure safety on highway nationwide.
The South West Chairman of the union, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, announced this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos yesterday.
He said that the training, which would last for three weeks, would to reduce frequent tanker accidents on the highway.
“We are aware that accident that involves loaded tanker used to have a devastating effect on lives, on the economy and infrastructure.
“Consequently, the national leadership of PTD, under the leadership of Alhaji Salumonu Oladiti, resolved that there is urgent need to train all tanker drivers on wheels nationwide.
“Although, we have been training our tanker drivers before engaging them on the road, we believe that constant training would reduce accidents on our roads,” he said.
The chairman said the four-week programme would involve all transportation agencies like Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) Ogun State Traffic Compliance And Enforcement Corps (TRACE).
He named other agencies to include Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA), states fire service, FRSC, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and medical personnel.
“We resolved that we need to engage these agencies to come and engage our drivers on how to drive safely on highway.
“We also want them to give our tanker drivers their rules and regulations so that they will abide by them,” he said.
Korodo said that the union had inaugurated a national committee to source for resource persons to lecture the drivers for the period of the training.
He said that the country, for the purpose of the training, had been divided into four zones namely Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kaduna and Warri.
The chairman said that Lagos zone would be opened by Alhaji Salimonu Oladiti, the National Chairman of PTD on April 20.
He said that 500 drivers would be trained in Lagos while remaining 300 would be trained in Ibadan, making 800 in South-West zone.
Korodo said that the other 2,000 drivers would be trained in Kaduna, Warri and Port Harcourt within the next two months.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
