The Commander General,

Alhaji Sokoto made the call during the formal “Inauguration of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Cross River Command/Appeal Fund to Acquire Office Accommodation and Working Equipment” for the Command, which took place recently at the Cultural Centre, Calabar.
According to Alhaji Sokoto,” The Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) having tried its best since inception in 1983, registered by the Corporate Affairs Commision under the Allied Matters Decree 1 of 1990 (Part C) with registration number RC 11834), there is an urgent need for the National Assembly to enact enabling law for the smooth operation of VGN.”
He noted that though, the VGN which started in Tudun Wada, Kaduna State as community policing outfit with the sole aim of checkmating criminal activities in the area, had spread across the 36 states including Abuja, and commended public-spirited Nigerians and the Inspector General of Police in ensuring the success of the organization.
The commander General also appealed to government of Cross River to assist the state command of Vigilante Group of Nigeria in providing office accommodation, operational vehicles, monthly subvention among others to enable the Command carry out its function effectively.
On his part, the Commissioner of Police, Cross River Command, Mr. Hanry Fadairo represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Igwe Hillary said security issue was everyone’s business and urged VGN and members of the public to report suspected cases to the police instead of taking laws into their hands.
Fadairo further called on the Vigilantes Group of Nigeria to rather partner with the Nigeria Police to combat crime instead of contesting with the police.
